U.S. Leaders Seek Vision for Evangelism at Orlando 2011
Orlando, Fla., April 6 –- About 700 people are gathered in Orlando,
Fla. to seek God’s vision for evangelism in the next decade. Fueled by
the momentum of Cape Town 2010, the Lausanne Movement gathering of
4,000 leaders from 198 countries last Fall, the U.S. Lausanne
Committee / Mission America Coalition (MAC) has convened hundreds of
U.S. leaders, and some from other countries.

Twenty-eight separate “affinity consultation” groups are discussing
the issues the Church faces in carrying out the Great Commission and
will submit practical next steps following the Consultation. Their
topics span every arena of evangelism and missions from global justice
to creation care to Islam to mobilizing congregations in missions.

The event opened Monday with a prayer focus — participants around 110
tables prayed for humble Christ-like hearts.

“You could feel the vibe in the whole room as people from table to

“This is what the Mission America Coalition is all about,” says Paul
Cedar, chairman, “bringing together leaders from all sectors of the
Body of Christ–denominations, ministry networks, city movements,
churches, evangelism and mission organizations–to humbly carry out
the Great Commission together. That’s why we began with an evening

Tuesday, Lon Allison, executive director, Billy Graham Center at
Wheaton College, gave the morning plenary address, “A Larger
Evangelism.”

Allison said many Christians fall into three camps of “Words, Works,
and Wonders,” but we need them all. “Both the Church and the world are
blessed by this fullness of God in action through us…in a tired
American world where modernity hopes have grown…disappointed.”

R. York Moore, national evangelist for Intervarsity Christian
Fellowship, delivered one of the responses to the plenary. “The long
history of our evangelical heritage placed too much emphasis on the
wrath of God and far too little on the wonder working power of God to
re-create the nations–to transform not only soul, but society as
well,” he said. ”Our hope is not in the destruction of the world but
in its re-creation.”

Orlando 2011: The Most Important Moment of the Day for Me
The first full day of Orlando 2011 has drawn now to a close. It was a fruitful day and I enjoyed it. I'm not sure where to go with the post today, but I do want to share a couple thoughts. The first is devotional -- probably the most important moment of the day for me. The second is more positional. That is, I want to highlight and support something that Bishop Hwa Yung said during his speech.
First, tonight Vonette Bright was honored by the Mission America Coalition for her work for the Lausanne Movement and the body of Christ. She received a nice ovation and then addressed the assembly. Most of what she said was focused on her late husband, Bill Bright. She said something like, "To live with Bill Bright was awesome!" She went on from there and left me with a strong sense that here was a woman who had an immense love and respect for her husband and his walk with Christ.
As she spoke, I considered my own death. I wondered what my wife would say about me. I realized that if Katherine is ever going to be able to honestly speak thusly about me as her husband, I would need to radically change. I need a revival as a husband and dad. I need a revival as a lover of God.
Then Fernando Ortega shared some songs about sin and forgiveness and repentance. Medicine.
Actually, perhaps it would be good for me to stop here. Ponder this thought would you? I will post something else on the day in a bit.

Orlando 2011: A Word of Warning after the First Session
The opening session of Orlando 2011 has ended. I feel sleepy. Some thoughts . . .
A lady I had never met before (a fellow Orlando 2011 attender) got my attention in the parking lot as I was walking to my car. This was before things began tonight. She asked, "Are you going to that thing tonight?" Assuming she was talking about the conference, I answered, "Yes." She asked, "Do you know if there are going to be speeches tonight or just prayer and worship?" I told her that I wasn't certain but that I thought the night was to be devoted to prayer and worship. "Okay," she said bluntly and walked away.
Hmmm . . . what was her name?
I think I have to struggle to not make Cape Town comparisons. This just isn't that. And it really doesn't have to be. I need to convince myself of that. I am still not a pro-Christian conference attender. I still go in with rather naive expectations of grandeur and glory. But, CT2010 was years in the making and this wasn't. So that's fine.
Still, I think that there is something missing in the air here. Maybe we will capture it by God's grace soon enough. But my encounter with that woman really began to bring it out in my mind. What I would like to do is simply offer some questions for reflection. If you are at Orlando 2011, I think you would do well to consider these. If you are a follower of Christ in general, it may be helpful to you as well.
1. Do we believe in a God who is sovereign, active, bigger than us? Who still speaks and has something to say to His Church? Who doesn't work by accident? As I walked away from my encounter with that woman and as I saw many people shuffling around the conference hall today, casually finding (or in some cases not trying to find) their assigned table groups I asked myself where was the sense of God's divine appointment. Do we take seriously the idea that God has divine appointments for us in Orlando 2011 or in other meetings of various kinds? Could God have a divine appointment for me in my table group, in the shuttle, in the parking lot?
2. Are we doing everything we can to bring as much of the breadth of God's Church to the table as possible? What is the ratio of men to women in Orlando 2011? Black and white? Young and old? Who is missing? Why aren't there more immigrant pastors? etc. I believe we must all work harder to cultivate the "will to represent" the body of Christ in its wholeness. Few things are more difficult. Still we must try. If you are at Orlando, who isn't that you believe should be? Who from a different race or ethnic group? Who from a different gender or age. Maybe you need to identify those people and make contact with them from Orlando. Tweet them and send them updates and pictures. What more can you do to bring them to the table in the future so that the whole body of Christ can be enriched by them?
Okay. I'm falling asleep so I'll stop here. I am very excited to be here for the consultation. I believe that God wants to do something great. But we do well to walk with more care in the Holy Spirit.

Orlando 2011: A Day Early
Hey everyone! Not too much to say right now. I arrived safely in Orlando for the US Lausanne (a.k.a. Mission America Coalition) leadership consultation yesterday. My wife, Katherine, and teammate, Jeri, arrived just a few minutes ago. I spent most of yesterday just roaming around Orlando. I drove near Disney, but couldn't afford to actually do anything. Did walk around the shopping area -- that explains most of the pics. I tried to take photos with my children's favorite characters. Which was slightly awkward.
Last night I was blessed to have a chance to hang out with John and Jan Baxter and Sadiri Joy Tira who serve in the leadership of the Global Diasporas Network. We extended our time through to this morning at Waffle House (yes!!!). I feel more excited and encouraged about diaspora mission and what God is doing in the world among scattered people. By the way, my title with the GDN has been changed from "strategist" to "catalyst". So, that's cool.
My vision initially for my role is to "catalyze" a group of diaspora missions practitioners -- people in the field, so to speak -- who will begin to network together prayerfully, seeking direction from the the Lord on how we can best serve the Church in mission.

Orlando 2011: A Leadership Consultation
In just a few days, Christian leaders from around the United States will be gathering in Orlando, Florida for the official regional follow-up to the 3rd Lausanne Congress. Some of us from TIBM will be going. I am excited to have the chance to serve the consultation as a table group leader and as a presenter on the topic of diaspora mission.
